I was never one for dress up as a kid. Looking back I wonder if it was anxiety, or just an unwillingness to be vulnerable in front of other people? Or maybe I just didn't have friends. I DID enjoy stories, and make believe, just not the actual act of dressing up.
Then again, it was the 80s and nobody thought to give kids options like 'dinosaur'. I think if I'd had dinosaur options i would have leaned into it SO HARD.
Which... now as an adult? I have a collection of onesies and I dress up as a dinosaur ALL THE TIME. (Onesies, if you don't know, are EXCELLENT maternity wear. They are the maternity moomoo of winter.)
ANYWHO.
My husband has a friend who has a daughter who is.. of an age where they generally like dress up. This week I decided to make her some costume items.. and no I didn't take progress shots because I totally forgot! Oh well. But if you're even remotely familiar with sewing these are so simple to whip up.
For the dragon wings:
Make some wing shapes, sew along edge, flip inside out and stuff lightly. Then sew again along the border, and for the V shapes. Attach some elastic for arms and wear the dragon wings around your house while contemplating how large a small child is and if these are even going to fit them.
For the mermaid tail
DO NOT use some pink crushed velvet you found that you know you're never going to use for anything because it's so drapey and soft you'll have to stuff it in order for it not to just go blllaahhhhhhh and when you try to stuff it you wonder to yourself if perhaps it looks not like a mermaid tale but other bits of a lady's anatomy that PERHAPS a child shouldnt be dressing up as. Frantically text a friend who tells you it's fine and looks great. Hot glue on some sequins and shit and then wonder at what age kids stop eating these. Also wear this around the house, confusing your husband when he gets home from work.

There are, of couse, some phenominal ideas floating around out there. I have no idea if i'm gonna have a chance to make any more in the near future, but here's some essentials for your kid's toy boy:
OOHHH DINOSAURS. Obviously I have a soft spot. Hell, I found an entire pinerest page devoted to making kid dinosaur costumes.
BIRDS. I would have to like the kid a bit more to put this much effort in. Though my dog would look amazing....
DITTO I found another pinterest page just for bird costumes??? I love the internet.
