4The LISTS. Let me tell you. There are some fierce lists happening. I feel like I'm losing the thread a little bit and need to sit back and reassess. PLUS I'm THAT kind of person? So there is wayyyyy too much crap in my hospital bag because that thing has been packed for WEEKS. Ah well. I'll sort that out today. (Meanwhile my husband's hospital bag has a pair of jeans and some beef jerky.)
Anywho.
I've been making some stuff for the newborn, which is always fun. The main thing I wanted to whip up was a 'newborn cocoon'.
Waz that?
Well, it's that thing in newborn photos that kind of looks like you stuffed the baby into a crocheted hat. Because newborn legs are sort of weird looking and skinny, so it tucks them in nicely and hides their junk. They sell on Etsy for anywhere from $20-$40.
I'm pretty confident at crochet so.. no. Gonna go buy some yarn on sale (this was hoops and thread, or threads and loops? ah! LOOPS AND THREADS ringspun yarn. It was on sale for $4.) And I managed to finish most of it while waiting at my doctors office.
As an aside, every pregnant person should take up crochet for doctors offices. It's portable and a good way to waste time when you're just sitting there waiting so somebody can tell you to pee in a cup.

To make this thing, you just start in the round and.. keep going. I just did a single crochet but you can get fancy if you want. The trick is to keep it loose so that it's stretchy.
The trouble was, how big do you make it? How big is a newborn child? The internet tells me 'it depends'. Which is.. sort of unhelpful. And it turns out googling 'size of average newborn torso' might put you on a watchlist so maybe don't do that.
Which is how my gf struck on the ingenious idea of using a newborn onesie. AH HA! Brilliant. I stuffed the onesie with yarn and then added another yarn head. It looks insane but seems to work???

The final measurements were about thirteen inches across the top at the widest part and nine inches deep.
We'll find out in a couple of weeks (!!) if it fits!
Now to make a tiny newborn couch...
