Hey yo!
It's been a pretty chill week. I've been doing a fair bit of 'anxiety crocheting' as I call it, a sort of going into beserker mode when my anxiety gets a bit high and just.. crocheting like the wind. Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-anxiety!
I've been experimenting crocheting with cord and rope tucked into the yarn itself – a technique used to make baskets and what have you. I managed to find some cool parachute cord at the dollar store but my quest for a solid ball of hemp has been.. unfruitful.
The parachute cord is neat, I've got 2 new coasters to show for it. The technique I used was.. well, I made it up.
Basically, you single crochet over the rope at first, going over and then under along the entire length.

The next part I haven't really settled on. I experimented with just stitching it together in a spiral, or crocheting over two lines of cord (which gave the firmest result) or connecting the rope with a line of single crochet to the chain already on the rope.
The last was the most consistently pretty, but not stiff enough. Good if you wanted something soft and crushable though. I suspect the answer here is 'firmer yarn' or possibly hemp or thinner rope... I'm not sure.

Then I tried making a basket! This was fun. I used the same method as with the coaster but kept going, eventually decreasing my stitches so that we were going up instead of out.
I had enough of this rope left over (some weird green stuff I found at walmart that I suspect is for towing your car??) that I then threaded it back through to make the whole thing stiff enough to hold some kitchen instruments. Not great, but not bad for a first attempt with no real instructions.

The other project I've started is this orange scarf.
What on earth possessed me to crochet with such a ridiculously thin yarn???? Something something fingering weight.
This is going to take FOREVER. This thing, in number of stitches, is already like 3 times the size of the crochet shrug I made a few weeks back.

Speaking of...
Tada! Isn't it great? This thing was so easy to work up, using about 800m of bulky yarn and took about 2 and a half days from start to finish. It's basically a giant rectangle and you single crochet in the back loops only for the ribbed effect. This lovely lady can explain it better than me, but it's a great project and I'll probably make another one.
I decided to add a button on the front, and petitioned the boyfriend to make me a button. THAT took about two weeks. Something something about oil or what have you.
Isn't it goorrrrgeous? It's zebra wood and about 2 inches across. And it looks fabulous on my jacket.
I've already suggested to bf that he make smaller ones for the next shirt that I make him. He jokes that we should start growing cotton and then TRULY WE SHALL BE THE MOST ARTISANAL OF THEM ALL!!!!
